While egg farmers make egg safety a priority, consumer play an important role in preventing food-borne illness by following proper handling, storage and cooking practices. Below are a few helpful tips for consumers once you bring home eggs:
- prevent cross-contamination by making sure your prep area and utensils are clean
- wash hands, utensils equipment and work surfaces thoroughly in hot, soapy water after contact with food
- store eggs in the refrigerator at or slightly below 40 degrees to maintain their safety and freshness
