While egg farmers make egg safety a priority, consumer play an important role in preventing food-borne illness by following proper handling, storage and cooking practices. Below are a few helpful tips for consumers once you bring home eggs:

  • prevent cross-contamination by making sure your prep area and utensils are clean
  • wash hands, utensils equipment and work surfaces thoroughly in hot, soapy water after contact with food
  • store eggs in the refrigerator at or slightly below 40 degrees to maintain their safety and freshness
  • cook eggs thoroughly to destroy any bacteria
